“Thelma the Unicorn” Coming to Netflix May 17th

Netflix has released a trailer for their latest animated movie, Thelma the Unicorn, set to be released on the streamer on May 17th.

Based on a 2015 children’s book of the same name by Australian author Aaron Blabey, Thelma the Unicorn centers on a pony who dreams of becoming a glamorous music star. After taking on the appearance of a unicorn, she instantly rises to global stardom, but this newfound fame comes at a cost.

First announced in 2019, Thelma the Unicorn is directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and Lynn Wang (Unikitty!) with Hess and his wife, Jerusha, writing the screenplay. It stars musician Brittany Howard as Thelma, Will Forte (Scoob!) as Otis, Jemaine Clement (Rio) as Vic Diamond, Edi Patterson (The Fungies!) as Megan, Fred Armisen (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) as Danny Stallion, Zach Galifianakis (Puss in Boots) as Crusty Trucker, Jon Heder (Surf’s Up) as Reggie, Maliaka Mitchell as Peggy Purvis, and Ally Dixon (The Croods: Family Tree) as Nikki Narwhal.

The animation is done by Mikros Animation. Other movies Mikros worked on include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Paw Patrol: The Movie, and The Tiger’s Apprentice. According to a post on the studio’s LinkedIn, teams in Bangalore, Montreal, and Paris all worked on the movie.

“It’s been a dream directing this alongside Jared Hess for the last 4 years.” Lynn Wang wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Our talented team has put so much into this adorable little Unicorn!”

“In January of 2020, director Jared Hess came to my show at the Hollywood Palladium and told me he wanted me to voice act as the lead in the animated film, Thelma The Unicorn.” Brittany Howard wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “He passed on the children’s book to me and after reading it, I immediately connected with the story and character. Over 4 years later and a whole lot of work and fun, I am so proud and honored to present the trailer to the film.”
