Transformers One Rolls Out SDCC Trailer

As we’re about to hit Comic-Con weekend, expect a lot of new trailers and announcements to be hitting soon. The first of these: a full trailer for next September’s Transformers One, the first animated Transformer movie to be released in theaters since the original broke the hearts of Optimus Prime fans so many decades ago.

But this movie takes place way before Optimus’s death….it goes practically back to his birth. Transformers One takes place in a Cybertron of long ago, when Optimus was just an inexperienced teenager waiting for puberty to turn him into a truck.

Together with his best buddy Megatron (yes, you read that right), Optimus lives a life of drudgery work completely below the surface of the planet, and has never seen its sun. He’s not allowed — he’s too young to transform, which gets him a lot of disrespect from his older neighbors. When he and his friends pick up a distress call, they decide this is their one chance to prove to their elders they have what it takes, and they sneak out.

Fortunately for them, one of the first things they find is an ancient cave with a being that grants them their transforming powers. UNfortunately, this same trip also introduces Megatron to the seductive world of evil.

How long ago was this? Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura claimed at the Transformers One SDCC panel today that the movie takes place THREE BILLION years ago (yes, with a B). Are these bots seriously that old? If you ask me, the adult Optimus doesn’t look a day over 500.

Transformers One stars the voices of Chris Hemsworth as Optimus / Orion, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron / D-16, Scarlett Johansson as Elita-One, Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion. The first animated Transformers film since the original rolls out to theaters September 20.
