It seems that the vast majority of the first wave of Toonami originals have been serious and dark affairs like Ninja Kamui, Housing Complex C, and Blade Runner: Black Lotus, but the next original, whose existence they just announced at Comic Con, is something unlike anything else they’ve done. They just released the extremally campy and over the top trailer for an adaptation of the Rooster Fighter manga:
Interesting to note that this is the first Toonami/Viz original. Toonami/Crunchyroll co-produced Fena Pirate Princess, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, and Shenmue, but their partnership collapsed when Funimation and Crunchyroll combined. We can also tell that this will be a CGI series, in spite of previous Toonami CGI originals having mixed reception. The studio Sanizigen will do the animation for this series. Daisuke Suzuki will direct, Hiroshi Seko (who worked on scripts for acclaimed series Jujutsu Kaisen and Mob Psycho 100) will write.
From what we can gleam from the trailer, the rooster knows Hyper Beam and it is Super Effective against demons. Tonally, if this trailer is an accurate depiction of the show, this resembles something similar to One Punch Man and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in terms of campy anime action fun. This is the official synopsis from Viz:
“Keiji is more than just an ordinary rooster—he’s humanity’s greatest defender! His opponents may be ten stories tall, but nothing is bigger than his stout heart and his fearsome battle cry—Kokekokko!”
This is probably the first of possibly multiple announcements from Adult Swim related to Toonami Originals (and possibly acquisitions). We’ll keep an eye out if there are any more announcements to highlight. Rick and Morty the Anime, Uzumaki, and Lazarus are the next originals to be released, and Comic Con might have news about those series too. Will this show be “Cluck yeah!” good? We’ll see.
