Rick and Morty, Adult Swim’s most popular original comedy, has been renewed for seasons 11 and 12. The announcement was made by Dan Harmon and Scott Marder (the show’s executive producers) at Adult Swim’s New York Comic Con panel. As Season 8 is arriving in 2025, the renewal of up through Season 12 should carry the show until at least 2029.
The cartoon, which revolves around an awkward teenager named Morty and his eccentric grandfather Rick going on science fiction adventures, began airing on December 13, 2013. The series went viral when Adult Swim premiered season 3 on April Fools 2017 with an episode where Rick transforms into Pickle Rick. The episode mentioned Szechuan sauce from McDonald’s, creating a demand that led McDonald’s to bring back the sauce on special occasions in 2017 and 2018. After the first three seasons aired, Adult Swim ordered seven seasons comprised of 70 episodes in 2018. Production speed also increased after this, with seasons going from biennial in the 2010s to annual in the 2020s.
The seventh season, which aired in 2023, featured significant changes to the cast. Justin Roiland, who voiced both Rick and Morty and co-created the series with Dan Harmon, was removed from the series due to domestic violence allegations. Ian Cardoni became the new voice of Rick, while Harry Belden took over the role of Morty.
Adult Swim has recently aired Rick and Morty the Anime from August 16-October 17, 2024. This anime version of Rick and Morty has aired on Saturday night in Japanese with English subtitles. The English dub airs on the Thursday night prior to the Toonami airing. The anime was a spinoff of various anime shorts made in 2020 and 2021. Adult Swim experimented with claymation in the Summer’s Sleepover short. While Rick and Morty has received critical and fan acclaim, the Anime has received a more mixed reception.
Rick and Morty has likely surpassed Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Robot Chicken as the most successful Adult Swim original. Many Adult Swim series have been too bizarre to capture a large mainstream audience, but Rick and Morty has been able to generate ratings on par with the popular Fox animated sitcoms.
