A flurry of questions still surround next months Game Awards: how many criticisms will host Geoff Keighley face this year? What percentage of the ceremony will be advertising: 75% or 85%? What are the latest fashions Hideo Kojima will be rocking?
One thing we DON’T have to ask about is who has been nominated…because that was settled this morning. The official list of nominees was published and are there any surprises? Not in the way of the games themselves, but which ones qualified.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is on the Game of the Year list. This isn’t Elden Ring 2, it’s DLC for the original Elden Ring. ER is a popular game, it’s true, but TGA hasn’t allowed DLC to qualify as “a game” in the past and it’s creating controversy….the first of many to come, we’re sure. TGA’s official stance on the matter, as of this year, was stated for the public:
“The Game Awards aims to recognize the best creative and technical work each year, irrespective of the format of that content’s release. Expansion packs, new game seasons, DLCs, remakes and remasters are eligible in all categories, if the jury deems the new creative and technical work to be worthy of a nomination. Factors such as the newness of the content and its price/value should be taken into consideration.”
No singular game is favored in this year’s list, but both Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Astro Bot are in the lead with seven nominations apiece. Coming up from behind them is Metaphor: ReFantazio with six nominations. “Best Indie Game” is more heated than usual with Animal Well, UFO 50 and Balatro all vying for the trophy (it’s worth nothing Balatro is also nommed for GOTY). “Best Adaption” means TV show or movie based on a game, and this year will be a tough battle with Fallout and Arcane pitted against each other.
