An animated film once again conquered theaters this last weekend; Dog Man, the Dreamworks adaption of the popular children’s graphic novels, took home all the bones with a $36 million win. That happens to be the highest opening for any film thus far in 2025, but the year’s still young.
You know that story about the cop who got injured and had to become part robot? This is a story about a cop who got injured and had to become part dog. One fateful evening, Officer Knight and his dog Greg had to undergo a risky operation that combined them into one being. The newly reborn Dog Man must now take down the one responsible for his condition: Petey the Evil Cat, who has terrorized the citizens of OK City for far too long.
The Dog Man movie was written and directed by Peter Hastings, who wrote for Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain and was also responsible for One Saturday Morning in the late 90s. Critics have been generally positive to Dog Man, but note it’s a very fast-paced film with little time to breathe between its 10,000 gags.
The film’s success shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s a parent; Dog Man has grown to be author Dav Pilkey’s most popular book series yet, even outpacing his own Captain Underpants from a few years prior. Pilkey created the character when he was the same age as its main audience, and frequently got in trouble with his teacher for drawing Dog Man comics. She thought it was a waste of time, but NOW who’s laughing?
Meanwhile Mufasa, incredibly, is still hanging on like a lion to Pride Rock, clinging to the #3 spot. The film — which technically counts as an animated movie no matter what Disney says — has had longer legs than Moana 2, which opened stronger but has drifted down to #7. It’s worth noting Mufasa‘s competitor Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has still outgrossed it by a bit.
