Rooster Teeth Officially Resurrected

The production company Rooster Teeth has had a wild ride over the 22 years of its existence. Founded from pretty much nothing, it rose to prominence through the machinima series Red Vs. Blue, which was little more than footage of Halo with dubbed dialogue. The success of Red Vs Blue led to podcasts, other web shows and eventually, the clout and resources to start work on a fully animated series, RWBY.

In 2014 Rooster Teeth accepted a buyout from Fullscreen media, a decision that would make them a small fish in an increasingly bigger pond as one merger led to another until ultimately, RT was part of the Warner Bros corporation during its AT&T years. Suddenly RWBY was crossing over with the Justice League and RT was able to make other cartoons with Maisie Williams in them that had runs on Toonami. Then it all came crashing down.

Then AT&T left Warner Bros in massive debt and the stingy Zaslav Era began, and one of their first actions was to shut down Rooster Teeth. Viz Media worked out a deal and was able to save RWBY, but for everything else, it was over…or was it?

Funny thing about the corporate machine….once they’ve decided they’re done with you and spit you out, you can essentially pick yourself back up and continue from where you left off. Company founder Burnie Burns announced today he has officially re-acquired the Rooster Teeth brand and will be taking it back to its roots — lo-fi, inexpensive web shows and podcasts.

“I am excited at the challenge of bringing Rooster Teeth back,” Burns said in a statement. “The heart of this brand has always been its fans, and I look forward to writing a new chapter together.” He did not specify which shows are returning, but it won’t be the ones you’re thinking of — the creators of Red vs Blue have officially retired the whole thing.

What about RWBY? Uh, Viz owns that. They could potentially work in cooperation with RT on a new cartoon, but that decision would be entirely theirs, not Burns’s. What will RT be without its two most popular properties? Guess we’ll find out. Everything old is new again.
