If you’ve been watching The Legend Of Vox Machina, perhaps once or twice you’ve thought of starting to follow Critical Role, the liveplay D&D series starring an ensemble of voice actors…and the place Vox Machina came from. But then you saw how ridiculously large the backlog was and how it would take months, possibly years, to watch all that and thought “never mind.”
The truth is, in the ten years that Critical Role has existed, it has only run three campaigns: Vox Machina, Mighty Nein and Bells Hells. Each of them took over three years to reach completion. The last time anyone could really jump into Critical Role knowing nothing was 2021, when Bells Hells began. We’re pointing all this out because….it just ended. Critical Role‘s third gang of misfits had its last adventure Thursday evening with an oversized all-nighter that started at 7 PM Pacific and lasted eight hours.
You want to jump into Critical Role? Now’s the time. There will be an all-new cast of characters soon, which you can follow from the first minute. Since these sessions all take place in the same world (Exandria) you might miss a few references to past events, but for the most part you’ll be able to jump onboard the train with little confusion as to who its passengers are.
No one knows what’s truly up next though. There’s usually a break of several months between campaigns, during which point the stream holds filler arcs with special guest stars. On February 13 a four-part miniseries called Exandria Unlimited will begin, headed by Brennan Lee Mulligan (from Dimension 20, a different liveplay series) and featuring CR’s Matthew Mercer and Liam O’Brien alongside guest stars Jasmine Don (The Legend of Vox Machina), Alex Ward (Salem’s Lot), and Celia Rose Gooding (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds).
Perhaps you want to take the down time to discover what the previous campaign was all about. There’s an easy way to be introduced to the crew of Bells Hells: a self-contained adventure, “Freaky Thursday,” was held live January 30 to raise money for LA wildfire relief. The episode, running a little over four hours, can be watched in its entirety here:
And for more about the future of Critical Role you can watch “State Of The Role,” a short video where the crew reflects on the past and reveals hints of what’s to come.
Critical Role stars Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, Liam O’Brien and Game Master Matthew Mercer. Its archive can be found in three places: Twitch, YouTube, and its own membership service Beacon.
