“Paul McCartney’s High in the Clouds”, a computer-animated feature based on the best-selling book from the creative minds of Paul McCartney, Geoff Dunbar and Philip Ardagh is on the way. First published in October, 2005, the creators of the book have been trying to get a movie in production since 2013. After Netflix backed out of the project in 2023, Gaumont, the world’s first and oldest globally-recognized film company has gained full creative, production and funding control of the project and has put out all the stops on the highly-anticipated family comedy which has been presold to a number of international distributors worldwide, including some in Europe, Latin America and Africa since production began last year.
The film is directed by celebrated independent animation legend Tony Grenkel with the screenplay being written by Jon Crocker and featuring original songs by none other than Paul McCartney with score by Michael Giacchino and production design by Patrick Hanenbergee. The story follows a teenage squirrel named Wirral, who after accidentally sparking a music revolution against the evil Gretsch the owl, he must embark on a journey to set music free. Currently in production with animation done by Gaumont Animation and 88 Pictures, Gaumont recently revealed the film’s all-star cast featuring a host of talented and comedic names.
Himesh Patel plays the main character, Wirral, Céline Dion plays Sugartail, Hannah Waddingham plays Gretsch, McCartney himself plays McKenzie, Idris Elba plays Barrel, Lionel Richie plays Gladstone, Ringo Starr voices Roy, Clémencé Poesy plays Doris, Pom Klementieff plays Mina and Alain Chabat plays Bigsy.
The soundtrack will be released by Universal Music Group while the film is a co-production between Gaumont, MPL, Unique Features and UMG’s PolyGram Entertainment in association with Lemoko Investments, Sky and James L. Nederlander Productions.
Will Wirral save music from the evil wrath of Gretsch? Find out in 2027.
