Most people know the free ad-supported streaming service Tubi as a place to take in reruns — it hasn’t had much luck yet with original content. Will their upcoming animated comedy Breaking Bear become the breakthrough they need?
The show is about a family of bear siblings facing threats from all sides: frackers are tearing apart the forest, mobsters are conducting dirty business in their backyard, and a fearsome pack of wolves seeks to take over their cave. What else can they do but…Break Bear. Jer, Blair and Alistair start fighting back, deploying any tactic they can find to save their home. It’s too bad they aren’t very good at it.
Breaking Bear stars Brendan Fraser as the voice of Jer, the family’s self-proclaimed leader. Sarah Michelle Gellar voices Blair, the “Penny From Inspector Gadget” of the group who secretly accomplishes the things Jer can’t. Josh Gad rounds out the trip as Alistair, an “adorable” bear cub who can turn ornery if you don’t watch out. Supporting characters include Annie Murphy as an ambitious newscaster and Elizabeth Hurley as the Wolf Queen.
“With Brendan, Sarah, Annie, Elizabeth and Josh, we have an incredible cast of series regulars,” said Adam Lewinson, Chief Content Officer at Tubi. “Breaking Bear is our wild, no-holds-barred send-up of classic mob sagas — from Scarface to Goodfellas — as a dysfunctional crew of bears crash headfirst into the world of crime, all in a desperate bid to save their forest. It’s bold, it’s chaotic, and we’re here for every outrageous second.”
But will anyone else be there? For every new animated show that catches on, there are about five that don’t. Will Breaking Bear be the next Rick And Morty or the next Praise Petey? (What’s Praise Petey? Exactly.) The show will need both talent and luck — we’ll see if it has both. Tubi has yet to announce a release date.
