The “Shantae” series of games is one of the biggest cult hits to come out of the “Gameboy Advanced” era. Created by developer Matt Bozon, the original “Shantae” game was released on the Gameboy Advanced in 2002, and while studio WayForward had hoped to create a full franchise, initial disappointing sales led to plans of a sequel being shelved. New entries started appearing in 2010 on the Nintendo DS, and in 2014 on the 3D2/Wii (and eventually transitioning to other consoles).
in 2023, it was announced that Publisher Limited Run Games would work with WayForward to publish a previously cancelled Shantae game that was in development for the GameBoy Advanced. Now titled “Shantae Advanced: Risky Revolution”.
Now developer WayForward has released a new gameplay trailer, showing off the gameplay mechanics and announcing a release “window”: Summer 2025 (though not specific date yet). Here’s the trailer:
The official press release from WayForward reads as follows: “Shantae is back in a 2D side-scrolling action–adventure game 20 years in the making! The nefarious pirate Risky Boots has a “groundbreaking” new plan that will leave Sequin Land spinning—by rotating the continent, she can move any town right to the coast for easy plundering! As Shantae, turn the tectonic tables on Risky by taking control of the land itself: shift, twist, navigate, and explore by swapping between mix-and-match multilayered levels! Hair-whip and belly-dance your way through scrambled lands, misplaced towns, monster-filled crypts, and daunting labyrinths. Six creature transformations, fierce boss battles, and a four-player versus mode await!”
Physical and Digital versions will be coming to modern consoles in the Summer, but there’s already been a Collector’s Edition made for the GameBoy Advanced that was just released in April. This version has faced some controversy in that Limited Run Games (with Developer Retro-Bit Gaming) used what appeared to be recycled chips to fill orders for the GameBoy Advanced version. The publisher issued a statement clarifying it was only in a small percentage of the manufactored GameBoy Advanced edition of games (due to high abundance of orders), and they say the batch of cartridges have been tested and all should work.
As for modern consoles, “Shantae Advanced: Risky Revolution” is releasing this Summer on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and on PC (Steam).
