Don’t fret over all the Toy Stories and Incredibleses you keep hearing about; Pixar still has plenty of original ideas. They just announced a new one at Annecy today: Gatto, the tale of a black cat in Venice with a lack of luck.
You see, in Italy even the cats are mixed up in organized crime. Nero, the “gatto” of the story, is in debt to a feline mob boss and looking for a place to hide. He’s got a passion for music, so he’s allured to the melodies of Maya, a Venice street musician. Nero and Maya form a tight friendship, which they’ll need to deal with Nero’s problems.
Enrico Casarosa, director of Luca (which you’ll remember also took place in Italy) is leading the charge on Gatto, and he shared one more bit of character lore with the audience: Nero hates water. Then he kinda picked the wrong place to live, wouldn’t you say? Gatto is scheduled to reach theaters in the summer of 2027.
While they had the stage, Pixar shared some more information on Hoppers. This is a wild one: it’s about Mabel, a girl genius, who builds a robot beaver and transfers her mind into it as part of an elaborate plan to stop the development of a highway. The beavers’ dam is right in the way, and apparently they’ll only listen to another beaver. Hoppers stars the voices of Piper Curda as Mabel, Jon Hamm as evil Mayor Jerry, and Bobby Moynihan as King George the beaver. It’s directed by Daniel Chong, creator of We Bare Bears, and it opens March 6, 2026.
Before the presentation ended we learned more about Toy Story 5, but not too much more. They stated Joan Cusack would return as Jessie, but that was never in question. They reiterated the main plot will be “toys vs tech” as Bonnie gets a new tablet (named Lillypad, and shown here for the first time) which takes all her attention. They still won’t explain how Woody happens to be there. With just a year to go before the film’s premiere on June 16, 2026, you’d think we’d gain a bit more insight.
