This week’s episode was the penultimate episode and it mostly involved our leads resting on hospital beds awaiting the end of the world. Without further ado, let’s recap the episode.
The episode begins showing all the leads in bed from illness or injury except Chris, who is watching Axel. Oh, also Leland, who spends most of the episode moping at Lazarus headquarters. Eleina is resting in Popcorn Wizard’s van, Doug is in a hospital in Islamabad, and Axel is in a hospital somewhere. Popcorn Wizard ends up fangirling over Eleina and brings up all of her accomplishments. Popcorn Wizard points out that it is odd that Eleina is able to recover from Hapna poisoning. Eleina uses her bracelet to look at Doug’s vital signs and finds out that Doug is still alive.
We cut to the President of the United States in bed from Hapna. It turns out that she took the clinical trial and is among the first to die. Meanwhile, we cut back to Popcorn Wizard and Eliena and it turns out that the former is helping Skinner because he saved an island from those with analgesia, the inability to feel pain, from a sinking island. She felt indebted and decided to help him destroy the human race. Despite the apparent conflict of interest and Popcorn Wizard being an accessory to killing the human race, they still act like besties.
It turns out that the assassin is still intending to finish his grudge match against Axel. Hersch finds out the assassin has dissociative identity disorder and is part of Project Hundun. The assassin talks on a payphone and announces that his quest to kill Axel is no longer about the money, it’s personal.
Popcorn Wizard and Eleina then come out with a plan to to save Doug. The government people come to try to kill Doug, who recovers from his injuries enough to hide from them as they shoot at empty bedsheets. They hack into the other hospital bed Doug is hiding on to make it move and he escapes. They open the back door of the van to retrieve him. A chase occurs and the van crashes through road closed signs and jumps off a bridge and lands safely on another road. They make it to the super fast vehicle port to get themselves back in the US. Popcorn Wizard gives Eleina a giant hug to her new best friend.
Meanwhile, Hacker 909 has been apprehended and the government attempts to get information about the location of Skinner. It turns out that this episode is the final day before the big deadline of when Skinner and the last hope to save humanity dies. Chris asks Axel if there’s anybody that he cares about to announce his potential death, and he says he’s got nobody, well nobody except this gang he used to hang out with. Because the world is about to end, she decides to kiss Axel.
The next episode preview reveals that the climax involves a final showdown with the assassin and that Skinner is finally caught. It does feel like the show is rushing to a conclusion with very little space to satisfactorily tie in the thematic elements. Most of this episode were the leads resting in hospital beds as the world is about to end. We did get the cool chase scene out of it, though. Also, we get hints that something is up with the members recruited for Lazarus as Eleina and Axel are hinted to be resistant to its effects. We didn’t really learn anything about Skinner, unfortunately. Next episode will be the pivotal finale. This better be better than the way the last two Toonami originals, Ninja Kamui and Uzumaki ended. This originals tend to end on sour notes, a trend I hope ends next week.
