It’s been one year since the X-Men line of comics relaunched, with many books featuring a redesign meant to evoke the spirit X-Men comics from the 90’s (to tie in with “X-Men ’97”, the animated hit series on Disney Plus). Now, a year later, the next big event for the X-Men has been revealed, and it’s also a return to the X-Universe of the 90’s: “Age of Revelation”, a spiritual successor to “Age of Apocalypse”, arguably the most famous X-Men storylines of the 90’s.
Here’s the promo text from Marvel’s press release:
“Every so often, a pivotal moment occurs that radically transforms the Marvel Universe, diverting its destiny towards strange timelines and dark futures. This October, in honor of the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest of those aforementioned sagas, “Age of Apocalypse,” behold the AGE OF REVELATION, a startling new X-Men event that sees the world reborn in the image of the heir to Apocalypse: Doug Ramsey, A.K.A. Revelation.
AGE OF REVELATION takes current X-Men storytelling 10 years into the future. After being welcomed onto Cyclops’ X-Men with open arms, Revelation set out on the impossible task that Apocalypse entrusted him with: creating a world where only the fittest survived. With his linguistic mutant power amplified to an astonishing new level, Doug commands Earth itself with his voice, reshaping it as a utopian haven for mutantkind. It’s a mutant homeland built on an insidious lie, spreading across the planet and wiping out humanity until it becomes a mutant homeworld!”
In a surprise move, Marvel has revealed a “shadow drop” of “Age of Revelation #0”, a prelude one-shot (written by Jed MacKay, with artwork by Humberto Ramos), will be released next week to comic retailers.
For those that recall, “Age of Apocalypse” was a story revolving around a change to the past (the killing of Professor X years prior) leading to a nightmare alternate reality in the present. “Age of Revelation” is a temporary view of the future 10 years from now (which arguably would mean it has more in common with the classic 80’s “Days of Future Past” storyline, but anyway…).
Just like with the original “Age of Apocalypse” storyline, all of the individual X-Men titles are being suspended and temporarily relaunched with new mini-series set without this alternate future. Marvel released a poster showing the numerous one-shots and mini-series to come:
Marvel has announced creative teams and descriptions for the upcoming titles will be announced starting as soon as next week. Stay tuned for further Marvel announcements in the weeks ahead!
