Dan Da Dan has always dealt with ghosts and other spooky stuff, but usually said ghosts have been played more for comedy compared to this spine-tingling horror tinged episode, the darkest and creepiest yet. Without further ado, let’s recap what happened.
The episode begins with Okarun going crazy and attempting suicide. Momo also goes crazy and attempts to stab herself with glass. Instead, our usual comic relief Turbo Granny gets stabbed (glass apparently isn’t sharp enough to hurt a possessed cat ornament). She makes a grouchy remark in one of the few comedic moments of this episode. Turbo Granny explains that the worm’s psychic powers are forcing them to try to kill themselves. Jiji asks why he isn’t affected, a question that is answered very quickly after. He tries to grab both his friends and carry them off to safety. All of a sudden, a freaky purple guy shows up.
The purple guy is the reason that Jiji is unaffected as his power cancels out the worms. Turbo Granny warns that the purple guy has the power of “the evil eye” (hey that’s the title of this episode), and that whoever looks into it will attempt to kill themselves in a manner similar to the giant worm. Jiji tries his best to avoid looking into its eyes, but, of course, it ends up happening and he gets a vision of the apparition’s backstory.
This ghost turns out to be a little boy who, a really long time ago, was sacrificed to a volcano god, tied to a stake and burned by the lava. He haunted Jiji’s house hoping to make friends, but he inadvertently caused people to commit suicide. The ghost was very sad and lonely. Jiji pitied the ghost and decided to look for the body of the ghost boy. It turns out that there are tons of layers of haunted houses beneath his house and all were at one point haunted by this ghost.
He finds the charred out remains from decades (?)/centuries (?) ago still tied to the stake. Turbo Granny warns him to ignore the Evil Eye as it is manipulating him. Jiji reaches out to the ghost and says he understands how sad and lonely it is and that he just wants to make friends with it. Well, it turns out that the Evil Eye was able to possess Jiji and this was all emotional manipulation. It seems the ghost is so angry and vengeful that it won’t accept friendship. Turbo Granny believes Jiji was possessed because he had supernatural powers just like the other three protagonists of this show.
We end with a big major fight scene at first between possessed Jiji and the worm. He uses a ball made of spiritual energy and kicks it like a soccer ball, fitting considering his love for the sport. Unfortunately, the ghost possessing Jiji turns out to be very malevolent and attacks Momo. She is unable to successfully block the psychic soccer ball and gets thrown into a wall. Okarun dramatically comes to the rescue and does a kick to block a psychic soccer ball. He tells the ghost not to dare to hurt Momo and we end on a cliffhanger teasing an epic fight.
We get our next episode preview advertising said fight and what looks to be the possibility of Okarun and Momo hand-holding. Are we in for some advancement in their romance? It seems like this episode served to give Jiji his obligatory shonen powers and provided some disturbing imagery and chills. This episode proves that Dan Da Dan can do dark as well as lighthearted (well episode 7, another dark episode, was also especially memorable). Let’s see what’s in store for us next week.
