The 2025 Emmy nomination list was released this morning. Any TV show in existence that aired an episode within the last twelve months can submit for consideration, but the list is pared down by committee and only a handful are chosen as nominees.
The Emmy judges haven’t always shown they have the best taste. I’ll probably never get over the year that Futurama‘s “Jurassic Bark” lost to a particularly lame episode of The Simpsons. But this year? There really isn’t a lemon in the bunch. The odds are pretty much one in five with everything.
Arcane. “The Dirt Under Your Nails”
Netflix / A Riot Games and Fortiche production for Netflix
Arcane‘s second and final season didn’t turn out as good as its first. mainly due to them trying to cram too much story into the limited amount of episodes they had. But it was still above and beyond most animated shows of the 2024-25 season. Jinx lives!
Bob’s Burgers. “They Slug Horses, Don’t They?”
FOX / 20th Television Animation
I can’t remember what this episode was about, but Bob’s is still miraculously funny almost 15 years after its debut season, and with the reduction in animated content TV has gotten in the last few years, I’m grateful it’s still running today.
Common Side Effects. “Cliff’s Edge”
Adult Swim / Green Street Pictures and Bandera Entertainment for Adult Swim
For once, someone dared to try something different and it paid off. Green Street’s Scavengers Reign was painfully ignored by the masses, but they scored a success with their second chance, and another season is in production now.
Love, Death + Robots. “Spider Rose”
Netflix / Blur Studio for Netflix
Increasingly, Netflix’s original animated content is video game adaptions — which I’m fine with, but not if it’s the only thing I can get. Love, Death + Robots is the kind of show they need to keep making (and greenlighting); something that continues to experiment with the animation artform.
The Simpsons. “Bart’s Birthday”
FOX / A Gracie Films production in association with 20th Television Animation
Based on the comment I made above you might expect something here about how picking The Simpsons is the ignorant man’s choice. But “Bart’s Birthday” was the best episode of The Simpsons in who knows how long. It was the supposed “series finale” that wrapped up everybody’s storylines to the distress of Bart, who wanted everything to stay the same. Most of the jokes hit, and the episode had an emotional heft the series rarely displays. Somehow, The Simpsons produced a new classic that, believe it or not, is 100% Emmy-worthy.
The 77th Emmy Awards will be held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14.
