At yesterday’s Nintendo Indie World Showcase, the most noteworthy game came first in the presentation: “Mina the Hollower”, the next project from Yacht Club Games, the famed Indie Studio and Publisher behind games like “Shovel Knight” and “Cyber Shadow” (games that captured the spirit of original NES games like “Super Mario Bros 3” and “Ninja Gaiden”) was announced as coming to the Switch 2, with a release date set for Octobert 31st, 2025. The game was already known to be coming to the original Switch, but Nintendo surprised fans further with the reveal of a demo of the game (for both Switch systems), and it’s out now! The demo is available for a limited time (until August 21st).
“Mina” started off with a Kickstarter campaign back in 2022, which easily met it’s fundraising goals. The game clearly wears it’s influences on full display: It’s gameplay style is heavily influenced by old school “top-down” Zelda games, while it’s story looks somewhat “Castlevania” in nature. The artstyle evokes the graphics of the Game Boy Color and Super Nintendo.
Here’s the trailer:
Here’s the description fo the game courtesy of Yacht Club’s website:
“Descend into a frightful world of action-adventure in Mina the Hollower. Take control of Mina, a renowned Hollower hurtled into a desperate mission to rescue a cursed island. Burrow beneath hazards and monsters, whip foes into oblivion, and gear up with an arsenal of sidearms and trinkets. Explore a vast world filled with pixel-perfect graphics, masterful gameplay, beastly bosses, and infectious music. Encounter a cast of bizarre characters, search out secrets in an array of exotic locales, and illuminate the omnipresent darkness in Mina the Hollower, a brand new game from the developers who brought you Shovel Knight!”
The “Switch 2” version of the game is also notable for having the capability of running at 120 frames per second! The original Switch version still holds it’s own ground with a decent 60 frames per second.
Though the promotional reveal this week was tied to the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 platforms, the game is also set for release on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and on PC, all on October 31st. Looks like after passing out all the candy, several “retro/pixel game” fans are going to have some fun to look forward to on Halloween night!
