Hello artists and animators! This August, Toon Boom Animation is exploring the ties between education, craft and community across the animation industry. Our first panel discussion on August 21 includes four instructors who also work as industry artists, each sharing how teaching shapes their professional practices. Then you’ll have the opportunity to watch storyboard artist Mike Morris improv a storyboard in realtime with special guest Mike Kunkel on August 27. We'll finish the month on August 28 with the crew behind the Sweaty Eyeballs festival to discuss how they found community in Baltimore’s animation scene. We look forward to seeing you all in the chat!
Thursday, August 21 from 3:00 to 4:00 PM Eastern
We often see advice for animation students. But what can animation instructors learn from their experience in classrooms and in-studio? We are interviewing four artists to learn how teaching shapes their practice as artists and also how working on productions influences what they bring back to the classroom. Panelists include Greg Araya, Sonya Carey, Tony Grillo and Jason Lin!
Wednesday, August 27 from 3:30 to 5:00 PM Eastern
Storyboard artist and director Mike Morris joins us once again for our Storyboard Pro Livestream with special guest Mike Kunkel! Our mission: Work with the audience to improvise something outrageous and learn about the craft of storyboarding along the way. What we need from you are characters, setting and conflict.
Thursday, August 28 from 3:00 to 4:00 PM Eastern
Sweaty Eyeballs is an animation festival hosted in Baltimore, Maryland, which showcases unique, experimental and diverse voices in animation with a focus on the craft that goes into independent animation. The festival’s founder and director of programming, Phil Davis, started the festival in 2012. We invited Phil and as well as Adam Davies (technical director), Lynn Tomlinson (juror), at Corrie Francis Parks (juror) to discuss their festival’s history, the role it plays in Baltimore’s animation scene, and their advice for artists interested in finding community in animation.
