According to a reliable insider, Sony is planning to release the PlayStation 6 in 2027. Posting on the NeoGAF forums KeplerL2 claimed that a 2027 release is “not just on the table, it’s the plan unless any unexpected delays happen” following a debate about new AMD tech that was revealed last week.

The same day, another insider shared a video about the unreleased AMD tech Magnus APU that is reportedly being developed for a new Xbox console. “It is targeting a 2027 launch,” claimed Moore’s Law Is Dead. “And I want to be clear, that since the recent Xbox Magnus videos and RDNA 5 videos I have put out there, I’ve heard from even more sources that Microsoft is talking to partners behind the scenes and just openly saying 2027 is when Magnus launches.”

Moore’s Law Is Dead went on to say the next generation of Xbox consoles “should be stronger than the PS6” but will also be “more expensive”.

“But you know what? That’s okay, I think, because this time around Xbox is going to be much more than a console. It should also be something that can run more than just Xbox apps, and challenge the PC gaming market,” he continued (via VGC).

Earlier this year, the Moore’s Law Is Dead channel claimed that Sony is currently working on a handheld console to rival the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox ROG Ally. The device could cost around $500 and will also be released in late 2027. Another report featuring “several sources who wished to remain anonymous because they were not authorised to talk about company plans”, the PlayStation 6 will launch with a detachable disc drive. Like the PS5, players will be able to buy a digital-only console and then upgrade it to play physical discs. One source claims Sony is “firm” in its decision to release a detachable disc drive because the PS5 version “hit all the company’s internal targets”.

Meanwhile Microsoft has dismissed rumours that is abandoning Xbox consoles after a leaker claimed that “really concrete plans” for new hardware “went from being definitive to up in the air”. However a spokesperson for Microsoft shared a statement denying those rumours. “We are actively investing in our future first-party consoles and devices designed, engineered and built by Xbox.” It was previously reported that the successor to the Xbox Series X/S would launch in 2027.
