History has not been kind to Jar Jar Binks. Originally, the character was supposed to be the comedy relief figure for “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace”, but he was quickly deemed annoying by many fans, and eventually he became the symbol of “everything that’s wrong with George Lucas’ Star Wars Prequels” (a viewpoint that’s since been scaled back in recent years, as many now look back fondly on the Prequels). But Jar Jar’s biggest offense was always his brief scene in “Episode II: Attack of the Clones”, in which Jar Jar helps pass a motion to grant Chancelor Palpatine emergency powers (powers he never relinquishes and which leads to him becoming Emperor). In essense, Jar Jar helped form the Empire.

But what we never got to see was what happened to Jar Jar AFTER “Revenge of the Sith” (after the Prequels ended). Now, a new upcoming comic book (from Marvel Comic’s Star Wars line of comics) looks to shed light on what became of the hapless Gungan, and to help redeem the character. The stand-alone story is written by Marg Guggenheim with assistance by Jar Jar actor himself, Ahmed Best! The actor has been very open about his struggles with being the “most hated” Star Wars character in years past, but recent years have seen many fans rallying in support of the character (and the actor).

The upcoming comic also sees the return of Kelleran Beq, the Jedi Knight who was briefly in a flashback scene in “The Mandalorian” Season 3 (also played by Ahmed Best, giving him a chance to play someone besides Jar Jar). Beq is another survivor of Order 66 and was responsible for saving the young baby Grogu from the Jedi purge. In the upcoming comic, it looks like Beq will seek to guide Jar Jar into helping with the formation of the Rebellion.
