Where did haunted mansions come from? Smithsonian magazine states that haunted mansions started out with Madame Tussauds wax room of horrors. From there in 1915 English fairs developed ghost houses to thrill patrons. Haunted houses did not take off until Disneyland released the haunted mansions in 1969.
At the start of the haunted mansion is a portrait gallery, depicting beauty, politics and power. The beauty is Sally Slater, tightrope walker eaten by a gator. Geroge Gracy the diplomat, Constance Hatchaway, the bride and the widow, and last of all the quicksand band, who’s last bet sunk them.
I think of the hitchhiking ghosts, Phineas (the traveler), Ezra (the skeleton), and Gus (the prisoner) when they play the song Grim Grinning Ghosts. But it was inspired by Shakespeare poem, Venus and Adonis. The poem reads:
Grim-grinning ghost, earth’s worm, what doust thou mean
To stifle beauty and to steal his breath,
Who when he liv’d, his breath and beauty set
Gloss on the rose, smell to the violet?
