One of the more intriguing panels from New York Comic-Con this year was “DC Vertigo: We’re Back!” panel, in which DC confirmed the “Vertigo” line of comics were indeed coming back. Originally launched in 1993, DC’s Vertigo comics were an imprint focusing on more “mature” storytelling, for creators to explore comics away from superheroes. Built upon Alan Moore’s run on Swamp Thing and Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, the Vertigo line of comics quickly gave rise to classics such as Garth Ennis’ “Preacher” and Bill Willingham’s “Fables”. But then the “Vertigo” imprint was closed down in 2019.
While the Vertigo line was initially replaced by the “DC Black” line of comics, those tended to focus on more mature (darker) tales of DC superheroes (like “Batman: Last Knight on Earth” and “Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity”). What was still lacking was comics NOT involving superheroes (like Gaiman’s Sandman or Ennis’ Preacher). But now the line is officially back, with DC Editor Chris Conroy announcing at New York Comic-Con that there will be 10 “Vertigo” titles coming next year.
While we could focus on any number of the 10 upcoming Vertigo comics, we’re starting out with Necretaceous. Co-created by Tom Taylor and Darick Robertson, the plot synopsis reads “Scientists attempt to time-travel to stop a zombie virus, only to land 66 million years in the past, among dinosaurs.” Now that’s a plot that just screams out “This just makes so much sense, why hasn’t this been done before?!” (Well, there was that episode of Primal on Adult Swim, but we digress).
Over the last decade, Tom Taylor has become one of the leading writers for both Marvel and DC, with noteworthy titles including his run on the “Laura Kinney” version of Wolverine (All-New Wolverine, from 2015 to 2018), and one of the best runs on Nightwing (from 2021 to 2024). Darick Robertson is the gritty artist behind many of DC’s Vertigo comics, including Transmetropolitan and The Boys. A few days after Comic-Con ended, DC released this trailer, featuring an interview with the creative team:
The relaunch of the DC “Vertigo” line of comics officially begins in February 2026, with existing comic “The Nice House by the Sea” Issue #7 now sporting the “Vertigo” branding, and with the following new comics (with the descriptions provided by DC):

Bleeding Hearts by Deniz Camp, Stipan Morian, and Matt Hollingsworth: A zombie named Poke discovers his heart beating again, threatening his place in a society where death reigns supreme.
End of Life by Kyle Starks, Steve Pugh, and Chris O’Halloran: A top-tier hitman returns to his Midwestern hometown to care for his dying father…and confront his own mortality.
The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Cain Mystery by Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips: A noir detective tale that collides with magic, fascism, and a stolen artifact of unimaginable power.
Those are just the initial line-up for February, but more are coming next year. While no release date has been given yet, the first issue of “Necretaceous” is anticipated to be coming in the first half of 2026.
