A Crash Bandicoot Animated Series Is In Development At Netflix

    Netflix is teaming up with Toronto-based animation studio WildBrain to create an animated adaptation of the PlayStation game series Crash Bandicoot. This news comes in the wake of several other successfully animated adaptations of video games on Netflix, including Arcane and Castlevania.

    Crash Bandicoot started as a platforming game released for the original PlayStation system back in 1996. Crash Bandicoot was a creation of Naughty Dog Studios, also known for game series like The Last of Us. Crash Bandicoot has had a rocky history since its original release, with the series going on ice after the game Crash: Mind Over Mutant was released to disappointing results in 2008. The series returned in 2017, with the release of the remaster collection Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which revived interest in the series. However, the game “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time” released in 2020 did not meet Naughty Dog’s expectations, and the game Crash 5 has been cancelled. Since then, Crash Bandicoot has been limited to appearances in mobile games and a multiplayer action title, Crash Team Rumble.

    This is not the first time WildBrain has made an animated adaptation of a video game for Netflix. WildBrain produced animated series such as an animated adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog called Sonic Prime and an animated reboot of Carmen Sandiego for Netflix. WildBrain has also produced other animated series, such as The Snoopy Show.

    This is not the first time Crash Bandicoot has appeared in animation; he has made a few appearances in the Netflix animated series, Skylanders Academy (based on Skylanders line of video games). Skylanders was also noteworthy for having Spyro the Dragon appear in some episodes. Spyro was the other major 3D “animal mascot” platformer game of the original PlayStation era. It is unknown whether this new Crash series will adapt a story from the game series or will tell an original story. It will be interesting to see more kid-friendly animated video game adaptations on Netflix after the success of darker, animated series aimed at adults like Arcane and Castlevania.
