Netflix’s One Piece is a large, large undertaking that likely wouldn’t be financially possible if the series were not a hit. The new behind-the-scenes video released today makes clear it takes a lot of resources to bring a tale this big to life.
Inkai Godoy appears in costume to tease that the last season ended with the Straw Hats coming together as a crew, and that as Season 2 starts “they are ready to go into the Grand Line… “and the One Piece…might just be there.” 1,000+ episodes and your cartoon counterpart hasn’t found it yet. But Luffy is known for his unquenchable optimism.
It sounds like Season 2 will keep up the quick pace of Season 1. When co-showrunner Joe tracz says “every one or two episodes we go to a brand new island,” he likely isn’t exaggerating. This season has been announced to contain the entire story up to Drum island, which means the Merry has to pass through Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Twin Cape, Whiskey Peak, and Little Garden to get there.
That’s a lot of set pieces and a lot of expenses, and we haven’t even gotten into the fact that an all-CG character joins the crew soon. Tony Tony Chopper was revealed last June; a reindeer who ate a Devil Fruit that gave him intelligence and the power to warp his body into a human shape. Tony Tony decided to put his smarts to good use and become a doctor, and then eventually a pirate. Mikaela Hoover, who voiced Floor in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and played Cat Grant in last summer’s Superman movie, provides the voice — and motion capture — for Chopper.
Then there’s the expanded cast! This always takes the wind out of me but I can try….this season introduces (deeeeeep breath)……Callum Kerr as Smoker, Julia Rehwald as Tashigi, Rigo Sanchez as Dragon, Charithra Chandran as Miss Wednesday / Nefertari Vivi, Joe Manganiello as Mr. 0 / Crocodile, , Lera Abova as Miss All Sunday / Nico Robin, Sendhil, Ramamurthy as Nefertari Cobra, Yonda Thomas as Igaram, David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3, Sophia Anne Caruso as Miss Goldenweek, Jazzara Jaslyn as Miss Valentine, Camrus Johnson as Mr. 5, Daniel Lasker as Mr. 9, Clive Russell as Crocus, Werner Coetser as Dorry, Brendan Murray as Brogy, Katey Sagal as Dr. Kureha, Mark Harelik as Dr. Hiriluk, Rob Colletti as Wapol, Ty Keogh as Dalton, Mark Penwill as Chess, Anton David Jeftha as K.M. / Kuromarimo, and James Hiroyuki Liao as Ipponmatsu. Phew!
One Piece returns March 10, 2026 on Netflix, with a third season now under way — all we know this far in advance is that it adapts the Skypeia arc, and that Ian Stokes, producer of Marvel’s Luke Cage and Iron Fist, will join the crew alongside Tracz as co-showrunner. Stokes is replacing Matt Owen who co-ran the first two seasons.
