Metroid Prime 4 was announced way way back in 2017. Miraculously, the console it was meant to appear on — then less than a year old — remains viable in the market eight years later, and Nintendo is fulfilling their promise to release the game on that system…though there will of course be an enhanced Switch 2 edition on the same day.
That day is now one month away! For years Metroid-heads have demanded some kind of extensive look at this game, and for years Nintendo has denied that look…and that practice continues into THIS year. We’ve gotten much more coverage over Kirby Air Riders, a game no one knew existed before 2025, than we have for this. The video Nintendo released today is not an extensive preview with a voice-over explaining all the new features. It’s simply a longer wordless trailer –and by “longer” we mean it’s more than a minute this time.
We see Samus use her new psionic abilities to conjure an energy whip that lets her scale platforms. We see her battle packs of wolves, big bugs, and some massive thing called an Aberax. We see more of the motorbike, and if you’ve been wondering if the developers would skimp out on the obvious opportunity to put in an “Akira Slide” moment…they didn’t. It’s in there.
We’d like to see more than that, of course, but we only have what they’ll give us. This game takes place on the planet Viewros where a rival bounty hunter, Sylux, is doing…something. We knew way more about Donkey Kong Bananza at this point; we knew who the VidCo villains were and their motives; Nintendo won’t share a thing about Sylux.
We better get one more video before this game comes out, and it better be meatier than what’s come before. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be released for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 December 4.
