After months of speculation regarding the future of KPop Demon Hunters, the most popular Netflix-Sony collaboration in all of time, we now have a concrete deal in place — a solid plan to produce something. KPop Demon Hunters 2, the official sequel, has been greenlit by both parties and will enter production soon. Everyone’s been craving a sequel immediately, so how soon could we see it happen? Uhh….have a seat.

You know how it takes an average of four years to make an animated movie from start to finish? That hasn’t changed. And they’re starting literally right now, so…we won’t see KPop Demon Hunters 2 dance across our small screens (or, dare we dream of it, big screens) until Two Thousand And Twenty Nine.

Any material that would theoretically be produced in the interim hasn’t been mentioned yet. The big talks of multiple spinoffs and TV shows and all that has yet to materialize in anything, and there’s no guarantee any of it will happen. As for those rumors of a live-action remake? That’s something we now know isn’t happening, because co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans publicly shut down the notion. “It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live action world. It would feel too grounded. So totally it wouldn’t work for me,” Kang told the BBC last month.

The only bit of KPop Demon Hunters, beyond this just-announced sequel, we can confirm is the mysterious short produced through Sony Pictures’ mentorship program LENS. Called DEBUT: A KPop Demon Hunters Story, it was put into production two years ago, well before the movie released and took off, and no one knows what it’s about. Also, it’s been rated by the MPA, which means it is complete and just sitting on a shelf right now, waiting for some kind of reveal.

In my opinion, Sony and Netflix are gonna have to figure something out. Let’s not repeat the Frozen strategy of doing barely anything and leaving fans to starve, gnawing on fanfiction for years. A KPDH TV series, or string of shorts, would really hit the spot and fill in the gap of that long, long wait.
