Dear Prime Minister Carney,
Nature Canada is troubled by recent events that signal a lack of commitment to make good on your promises to protect nature: it was not mentioned in your mandate letter, your budget did not fund the 2030 Nature Strategy, and the recent resignation of Steven Guilbeault from the federal Cabinet indicates he is not satisfied with your direction. For years, Minister Guilbeault served as a crucial and reliable voice for nature in federal politics and a reassurance that nature was part of the bigger plan.
His inability to remain part of your Cabinet signals an emerging crisis of confidence in your commitment to environmental protections, obligations to Indigenous peoples, and your understanding of the dual climate and biodiversity crises.
It is not too late for your government to act on your promises to act for the conservation of nature. The economic stress we face only reinforces the duty to protect this vital public asset. To regain the trust of the thousands of Canadians who cherish nature and are losing faith in the decisions being made behind closed doors, we urge you to act swiftly.
Signal to Canadians that your actions match your words: fully fund and implement Canada’s 2030 Nature Strategy.
We are writing today in acknowledgement of your stated love of nature and concern for our planet. We hope that you will honour the trust placed in you by Canadians.
Sincerely,
Nature Canada
