When The Simpsons Movie 2 was announced last September, it was given a release date of July 23, 2027. This happened to be the same premiere day as something else on the schedule called “Unannounced Marvel Project.” It was a little weird for Disney to be doing this and we wondered which of the two films would blink first. Looks like Homer lost the staring contest.
The announcement was made with a new poster, depicting Homer accidentally impaling his foot with a flag that’s been altered from the previous release date to the new one: September 3, 2027. “Now Coming Labor D’oh Weekend,” 20th Century Studios promises.
What’s especially D’OH-worthy about this is what it means for the promise The Simpsons made back in 2007:
This is from the main title sequence to the Season 19 opener “He Loves To Fly And He Doh’s,” which rearranged the familiar scenes of the family journeying home to mix in the aftermath of the movie’s events. Had The Simpsons Movie 2 stuck to its July 23, 2027 release date, it would have kept this statement true, beating the July 27, 2007 release of the first movie by four days. Instead the Labor Day move pushes it past that mark, making Bart’s chalkboard a complete lie. HA ha!
We still don’t know what the Simpsons writers have in mind that’s big enough for another movie. All we currently have to go on are the words “Homer’s coming back for seconds,” printed on the teaser poster released alongside the announcement. A familliar yellow hand reaches for a pink donut sprinkled with little “2”s. The logo for The Simpsons Movie, you may remember, had a donut in place of the “O,” except in cases where there was just a donut stain and Homer was seen below eating it.
In the original Simpsons Movie, Homer had to overcome his shortcomings in order to save his family and the entirety of Springfield from mad EPA agent Russ Cargill. There was also a pig in there. The film wound up grossing $536 million from a $75 million budget. The sequel is, currently, scheduled for Labor Day Weekend.
