If the second season of Netflix’s live-action take on Avatar: The Last Airbender is anything like the first, don’t expect any real surprises. Season 1 was pretty much the same thing as Season 1 of the cartoon, only with a LOT MORE expository dialogue. But even if Season 2 serves up more of the same, a Xerox of ATLA Season 2 is still a Xerox of one of the best seasons of anything.
For this is the season that introduces Toph Beifong, arguably the best character on the entire show. (Actually, there’s no arguing about it — she IS the best character on the show.) Since Aang’s Earthbending skills need a lot of work, Sokka and Katara are looking for a trainer…and they just happen to stumble upon the best around. Toph is blind, but she doesn’t NEED eyeballs. No one beats Toph. Toph can vanquish twenty charging Platypus Bears with one stomp of her feet. Toph rules.
It’s some heavy barefoot feet to fill, and they’ve enlisted Miya Cech to pull it off. Check out the trailer below and see what you think of her. Cech joins regular cast members Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara and Ian Ousley as Sokka. Also returning are Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Thalia Tran and Momona Tamada as Mai and Ty Lee, and Maria Zhang as Suki.
Joining the cast this year are Terry Chen (Lucky Star, Jessica Jones, House of Cards) as Jeong Jeong, Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness, Between the Temples, Ghostlight) as Lo and Li, Lily Gao (Blue Sun Palace, Twisted Metal, Slip) as Ursa, Madison Hu (The Brothers Sun, The Boogeyman) as Fei, and Dichen Lachman (Severance, Jurassic World: Dominion, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) as Yangchen.
“We’re looking forward to working with all of our actors again and digging into the deeper, more complicated relationships that develop as their journey continues in Season 2,” says executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani. “We are going to show the real-world versions of iconic scenes from the original, and explore some of the stories that the animation didn’t. Mainly, we’re looking forward to seeing our gang all together again.”
There will be three seasons of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, each adapting a season of the animated version. Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back to back, so there shouldn’t be a Hawkins-sized stretch of time between them. But if you get too impatient, rewatch the cartoon. The season teased below will debut on Netflix sometime in 2026.
