Supergirl Takes Off And Crash-Lands In First Movie Teaser

DC Studios overlord James Gunn says his DCU will be different than the MCU in one major way: the movies won’t feel like some big connected pie. Each DCU film will be different and feel different, and Gunn makes that loud and clear with the first teaser for Supergirl, released this morning.

Milly Alcock stars as Kal-El’s cousin Kara Zor-El, who in this reality is a train wreck who doesn’t know what she’s doing and is never sure. But she has her best friend Ruthye Marye Knoll (played by Eve Ridley) to back her up as well as her loyal space dog, Krypto. The film is heavily inspired by Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, to the extent that the trailer itself suggests at the end you read it.

As Gunn explained in an interview, “In our story, we have Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents. Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet and she lived there for the first 14 years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more (bleep)ed up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far.”

Some people are accusing this of looking too much like Guardians of the Galaxy. To that I say…so what? It could be a complete ripoff and it would still please me because the Guardians movies were great (and so is the holiday special with Kevin Bacon, which I should go rewatch now). But it’s not gonna be a ripoff. Gunn is smart enough not to just make the same movie over again (knock wood).

If anything does worry me, it’s that Gunn might be trying too hard to sell Kara’s character type. Kara’s a MESS, people! She gets DRUNK! She has her dog pee on stuff and doesn’t care! She gets drunk again! She slurs her words and stumbles around! She gets drunk a third time! She doesn’t even comb her hair! She smells like booze probably! Cause she’s DRUNK! She’s a MESS, get it? GET IT??

Hopefully the final product won’t sledgehammer it in as hard as this video does. Supergirl premieres in theaters June 26, 2026.
