Mainframe Entertainment is a company that many people who grew up in the 90s and enjoyed animation would be familiar with. This was the company that created some of the first CG animated series to ever be released, cementing its legacy with hit shows like ‘’Reboot’’ and ‘’Transformers: Beast Wars’’. Although these shows may seem primitive now, they helped pave the way for CG animation being more common in TV animation. This Canadian animation studio is back and is developing a new animated series, “The Immortals & the Shadow Realm.”
The plot for the show involves the immortals, who must deal with the Dark Ones escaping from their Prism prison and being free to once again threaten humanity. A pair of immortal siblings, Kouto and Daeji, must obtain all the pieces of the shattered prism to imprison the Dark Ones before they can consume Earth and the Shadow Realm in eternal darkness. Kouto and Daeji are joined by their half-brother, whose mysterious past may be tied to the destruction of the prism. The trio must learn to trust each other to defeat the Dark Ones.
Mainframe President & CCO, Michael Hefferon, described the process of creating “The Immortals & the Shadow Realm” thusly:
“We’ve always believed in reinventing ourselves as storytellers and as a studio. With The Immortals & the Shadow Realm teaser, we pushed ourselves to explore new tools, new visual languages, and entirely new ways of building worlds. The result is a project that will not only expand our capabilities but redefine the next era of Mainframe.”
Hefferon also described this series as being inspired by and blending elements from ‘’K-Pop Demon Hunters, Arcane and various anime series. In addition to Hefferon being the executive producer, other people working on this series include Florian Wagner (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rick and Morty) as the director, Edison Yan (The Dragon Prince, Invincible) as Art Director, Tanya Green (SuperKitties, Team Zenko Go) and Amanda Konkin (Ada, The Switch) as producers.
Mainframe released a trailer for The Immortals & the Shadow Realm, which can be viewed here:
Hefferon also stated he hoped Immortals & the Shadow Realm could expand into other media venues, like video games and comic books. This show will also be aimed at a broad demographic that includes kids and young adults. It is not currently known what streaming service or channel will host this show.
