My Hero Academia: “My Hero Academia” Episode 170 Recap *Season Finale*

This is the second to last episode (with May being the finale) and we see what becomes of Class-1A. What a ride this season and series has been. So without further ado, let’s recap this episode.

The episode begins with Hawks discussing the goals of expanding the hero ranking system and a discussion of the state of hero society in general. By expanding the rankings, superheroes who do more mundane tasks could get credit they wouldn’t ordinarily receive. We see a young boy who is hunted down for having an undesirable quirk that appears to be similar to Shigaraki’s decay quirk, but a kind old woman helps him. We have yet another montage of heroes rebuilding society after the villains rampaged it. A member of the League of Villains wrote a best selling book about his involvement in the incident.

The big emotional Class 1-A graduation finally happens. IIda gives the graduation speech and we see everyone get their diplomas. We then cut to show what students are now doing after graduation. Mei Hatsune now is a professional gadget maker. Bakugo is a pro-hero, albeit very unpopular. Todoroki continues to be popular despite the controversy of his father. Shoji stands up for heteromorph rights. Froppy and Uravity are now quirk counselors. The number one hero is now LaMillion. Midoriya himself is now a teacher at UA high. We also see a montage of the small child characters like Eri and Kota grow up and advance to middle school.

Aizawa talks to Midoriya and says that he believes that he is too lenient a teacher and that leniency will lead to students growing complacent and not improving in their abilities. A young boy comes up to Midoriya and says that he greatly looks up to him. It seems heavily implied that this child is the one with the decay quirk, in a way signifying Midoriya mentoring a boy to not become like Shigaraki. Midoriya admires a poster of Tokoyami, a reminder that Class 1-A succeeded after graduating. All Might comes to ask Midoriya if he misses having the power of One for All. Midoriya confirms that he indeed feels that way. All Might surprises Midoriya by giving him a present. It appears to be cybernetic enhancements that allow for him to be able to do hero work.

The episode ends with the cliche “where are they now” text that is more common in American movies than anime. Some we already are familiar with, like Froppy and Uravity being quirk counselors. Mina is now popular as a dancer. Aoyama is a top ranking hero. Bakugo continues to be unpopular due to his personality.

And this episode wraps a neat little bow on what is My Hero Academia, with one more adventure coming out in May. This been an emotional journey with a very lovable cast. It seems like Midoriya still has a shot at being a traditional superhero rather than just a superhero teacher. Maybe the most disappointing aspect of the finale is that we get no closure on the romantic plots and don’t see Midoriya and Uraraka interact, even if they interacted last episode. We’ll see if the really, for really, for realsies this time finale in May rectifies that.

The finale cements My Hero Academia as a Shonen Jump legend whose legacy isn’t too far from previous legends like Dragon Ball Z or Naruto. In fact, with the exception of maybe Attack on TitanMy Hero Academia seems like it will remembered as the preeminent anime of the 2010s and Naruto‘s successor as the defining Shonen Jump title of a decade. The series came at the perfect time to capitalize on the superhero boom of the 2010s and the anime Renaissance of the 2010s.
