A new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was shared yesterday and gaming fans are now very excited about the upcoming film
The Super Mario Bros. Movie, created by Nintendo and Minions studio Illumination, was released in 2023 and went on to earn more than $1.3billion at the box office. A sequel was confirmed in March 2024 and is due to hit cinemas April 3, 2026.
Over the weekend, a new trailer was shared via a dedicated Nintendo Direct. The two-minute video gave fans a first look at Yoshi but a number of deep cut characters were revealed too, including Birdo, Mouser, Lakitu and Baby Mario. The T-Rex from Mario Odyssey also made an appearance, sounding an awful lot like the dinosaur from Jurassic Park.
For over 30 years, Yoshi has been a significant part of Mario’s adventures,” explained Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto. “When we began developing Super Mario World, Yoshi was created from the idea of wanting to run around while on a small dinosaur. Later, in Super Mario World 2, he protected Baby Mario. Even after evolving in 3D, Yoshi has continued to play an active role across different games,” he continued before promising “many familiar characters” would play an “active role” in the movie.
And gaming fans are very excited about the many Mario game deep cuts that are set to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. “I’m sorry was that fucking Mouser (and Clawgrip)? Neither of those two have appeared in anything new capacity for like decades. That’s actually pretty cool,” wrote one fan on Reddit.
