Isle of Wight indie trio ugly ozo have returned with their latest single, “hi, how are you?”, released today, February 3rd, via REX RECS. The track serves as a raw exploration of depression and the “hollow” feeling of emotional exhaustion, further establishing frontwoman Jessica Baker as a “sonic diary of a chronic oversharer.” Backed by her sister Boo Baker and drummer Tristan Northard, the band has quickly ascended the ranks of the UK indie scene, earning high-profile acclaim from the likes of Iggy Pop and KEXP.
Jessica Baker provided a candid look at the mental state that birthed the new track:
“I wrote ‘hi, how are you?’ at a time when everything felt pretty hollow and grey. I felt like I really was running on empty, just plodding through the motions of every day without really feeling any fulfilment or satisfaction. This track is kind of like a conversation between myself and my inner rival, like I’m playing tug of war between self-doubt and determination.”
The release follows a landmark debut year, which included the successful 2025 EP stargirl and a sold-out headline show at London’s Shacklewell Arms. Now signed to Macks Faulkron’s REX RECS, sharing a label home with artists like Caroline Polachek and Confidence Man, the trio is currently gearing up for a second EP due this spring.
