Shaky – “In a Heartbeat”

Operating solo out of his Pennsylvania basement, Shaky captures the bittersweet bite of nostalgia on his infectious new single, “In a Heartbeat.” Written, produced, and performed entirely by the artist, the track channels a melodic garage rock energy that maneuvers between defiant anti-authority themes and passionate rock immediacy. It presents a soulful look back at simpler times, serving as a standout introduction to his upcoming sophomore album, Kinda Wild II. Also released alongside the track is an excellent music video, above, from Philadelphia-based director Joe Lee.

Fuzzy guitars and a twangy, playful layer coalesce into a melodic vocal proclamation: “don’t cut your hair yet, and don’t cut out the cigarettes.” A defiant character emanates in the “try not to listen to the man and his empty threats” continuation, reminding fondly of Green Day in the verses with its anti-authoritative thematic precision and vocal tone. Meanwhile, the ensuing sequence — with its glistening guitars and colorful synths — conjures a Strokes-esque pull with its hooky vigor and climactic culmination.

“Oh, if I could go back to you,” an affecting vocal yearning conveys as the final minute arrives, moving forth into another delectable “I’m not a liar” central chorus with shimmering guitar and synth interplay. The track’s contagious production and momentum-filled vocals immerse throughout. “I would go back in a heartbeat,” they conclude into an abruptly satiating send-off, wrapping up a standout, infectious success from Shaky.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
