Helldivers will hit cinemas November 10, 2027 and be directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious, Community). Momoa will star in an unconfirmed role.

Top-down shooter Helldivers was released in 2015 and followed a troop of elite Super Earth soldiers taking on a variety of alien enemies. A sequel followed in February 2024 and  quickly became Sony’s biggest ever PC release, breaking a record set by 2018’s God Of War. Helldivers 2 went on to become Sony Studios most popular release, shifting over 12million copies in three months. A movie adaptation was announced last January.

According to PlayStation Productions Head Asad Qizilbash, the film will take heavy inspiration from Helldivers 2 which is set in the 22nd century after a fascist Super Earth emerged victorious from the First Galactic War. The hit game follows a group of soldiers trying to contain a breakout of genetically-engineered bugs known as Terminds from galactic farms while defending Super Earth from revenge-driven attacks by Automatons and the mysterious alien race known as The Illuminate. The game was heavily inspired by 1997’s sci-fi satire Starship Troopers, which was based on Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel of the same name.
