The sports drama, released last year, starred Brad Pitt as a former racer brought back into the F1 circuit to help an ailing team. The film was a box office success, making $630million (£467million) worldwide, a record for producers Apple Original Films. It was also a surprise contender for awards season, currently nominated for three BAFTA film awards and four Oscars, as well as winning two Critics Choice awards.

Speaking to the BBC at the annual Academy Awards luncheon in Los Angeles on Tuesday (February 10), Bruckheimer confirmed: “We’re working on a sequel.” The Hollywood legend, who produced films such as Top Gun and the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, refused to share any further details, but did express he was “surprised” the film scored four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

Regarding the movie’s success, he said: “It was a long journey to get the movie made because we had to endure a couple of strikes – but in the end, the movie entertained audiences around the world. I never worked with Brad Pitt before and it’s really a thrill to work with Brad.”

NME’s four-star review of F1 described the movie as “Top Gun on wheels”, with critic Nick Levine writing: “Buckle up and enjoy the ride, safe in the knowledge that the tyre talk never gets too overwhelming.”

Pitt will be next seen in The Adventures Of Cliff Booth, a spin off for his Once Upon A Time In Hollywood character. The movie will be written by the previous movie’s director, Quentin Tarantino with David Fincher helming the new project. The first trailer for the movie was revealed during last weekend’s Super Bowl.
