Seven Crows – “BOREAL”

An exploration of life’s shifting nature and the overlapping nature of moments, memories, and emotions, “BOREAL” is an enveloping new track from Seven Crows. Built entirely from layered electric violin loops by Los Angeles-based producer Chris Murphy, who helms the project, the piece captures the “power of random change” — as described by Brian Eno. Shimmering strings evolve into an expansive intrigue, gripping in its gradual swell. The immersive neo-classical and post-rock hybrid serves as a riveting preview of the upcoming album Powers of Observation, recorded in Portland with producer Gregg Williams.

The track’s production is a masterful display of texture and momentum, beginning with the emergence of a simmering string-laden undercurrent. The 45-second mark signals the entry of a trickling, plucky charm — adding seamlessly amidst the chilly, all-enveloping strings. A multitude of layers coexist at this point, maintaining a darker, dreamier allure past the three-minute turn. Eno’s aforementioned “power of random change” is especially present in this middle, where the initial vibrancy falls into a more introspective pull.

The final couple of minutes continue to hypnotize with haunting strings, plucky subtleties, and caressing audible qualities, culminating in a gentle fade-out — made even more impactful by the video’s imagery of the artist walking away through the forest, following an intimate performance that resembled a fervent connection with nature. Gorgeous in its intertwining of strings and overall structural development, “BOREAL” is a lovely standout from Seven Crows.
