big long sun Share New Single ‘call it a voice’

Brighton’s most prolific DIY outfit, big long sun, are back with their latest single ‘call it a voice’, released today, February 24th. The track serves as the “dark, paranoid” counterpart to their previous release, ‘my stars aligning,’ and marks the final countdown to their third full-length album in just 18 months. Titled love songs and spiritual recollections, the record is set to arrive on April 22nd via state51, cementing the band’s reputation for a relentless work ethic and a show must go on attitude.

Written and recorded by band leader Jamie Broughton in his home studio, ‘call it a voice’ was tracked entirely on a Tascam 244 cassette machine. This lo-fi approach re-wires classic 70s singer-songwriter aesthetics into something much more haunting. Broughton describes the track as a “calculated mania in B minor,” exploring the spiritual insecurity and solitude that permeate the upcoming album. It’s a stark, melancholic shift for a band that has rapidly ascended from high-street busking to a BBC Radio 6 Music live session and a coveted slot at The Great Escape.

of the single, Jamie describes,

“‘call it a voice’ is a dark, paranoid folk anthem for the spiritually insecure mind. The lyrics explore the different shades of madness that accompany solitude… It’s cold and insular. A calculated mania in B minor, with major notes of melancholy.”

The announcement follows a whirlwind year that saw the band make their European debut at Left of the Dial and earn support from heavyweights like Steve Lamacq, Giles Peterson, and John Kennedy. With an appearance already confirmed for End of the Road festival this summer, big long sun’s trajectory is accelerating at a pace that few independent acts can match.
