Dose is a fiery psych-rock standout from Galveston, TX-based band India Tigers in Texas. This sophomore album blends organic spontaneity with infectious grittiness, navigating from the hypnotic atmosphere of “Loading…” to the anthemic energy of “Another Castle.” It plays like a holistic, mind-bending journey that solidifies the band’s tendency for wonderfully evolving psych-rock gems.
A commencing swell, “Loading…” ventures from murky intrigue to psychedelic glimpses of rhythmic pitter-patter, hypnotic guitars, and jungle-like sounds. That delectable atmosphere continues into “Another Castle,” where a punchier percussive presence drives into an array of jangling guitar pulsations. The answer-searching lyricism furthers that mystique into commanding “just a game” reflections, and then an ensuing blast of anthemic energy. “I don’t mind,” the vocals let out there, inducing replays in its ascent from psychedelic haziness into fervent captivation.
“King of San Francisco” is also exemplary of the band’s dynamic tonal chops. Wayfaring, magnetic single-layered vocals build with palpable momentum into a series of jumpy guitar progressions and expanded vocal passion. The epic “Temujin” arrives next, initially resembling the album’s opener in its psychedelic haze and touches of ambient effects. A galloping rhythmic presence then bolsters a twanging guitar drive and guttural vocal resemblance, followed by a commanding vocal lead. By midpoint the track excels with harmoniously soaring vocal layers and a continuous sense of motion, with the twangy guitars around midpoint being especially gripping as spacey synths buzz in.
Another long-running delight, “Jabberwocky” moves from playfully illuminated guitars into a rollicking rock tour-de-force, swiftly contagious as brisk vocals and squiggly guitar feelings maneuver seamlessly. Album finale “Dark Water” also excels, initially set amidst rainfall and jangling guitar mystique and rising into a final wall of thunderous distortion. India Tigers in Texas’ Dose is a gripping album from start to finish.
