Sungaze – “Be a Better Man”

Cincinnati, Ohio-based band Sungaze build a dreamy shoegaze allure across “Be a Better Man,” a gripping new single that precedes their upcoming album, I’m No Longer Afraid of Heights. Jangling guitar textures, pulsing rhythms, and lead guitarist Ian Hilvert’s ethereal vocals move with hypnotic captivation; per the band, the vocals are “sung from the perspective of one realizing they’ve inadvertently been living in a selfish manner and then choosing to make changes in order to better the lives of themself and those around them.” They add: “The song holds space for a better way of being to take form without snubbing feelings in the process.”

“It’s my own damn fault, for acting like a doormat…” those vocal contemplations exude a comforting haze within a momentum-filled guitar drive, culminating in twinkling, twangy appeal as the “be a better man” refrain hits hard. This soaring outro delights in its whirring guitar tones and submerged vocal feeling, abundant in emotion while still giving emphasis to the fervently illuminated guitar work. “Be a Better Man” represents more success from Sungaze, who first caught our ears last year with the single “House on the Hill.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
