Phoenix-based composer and painter Allan Jamisen continues expanding his cinematic, genre-blurring catalog with the immersive new single “This Is Not An Act.” Following a run of stylistically adventurous releases, Jamisen leans further into atmospheric storytelling here, pairing spoken-word intensity with lush jazz textures and moody electronic production.
Opening with bass-heavy resonance and an entrancing spoken lead that beckons listeners to “take me away,” the track unfolds into a late-night haze of smooth saxophone, flute accents, and haunting wordless vocal layers. Starry-eyed textures create a dreamlike setting as woodwind flourishes glide through the mix, while the vocal delivery balances sensual confidence with reflective vulnerability. The arrangement builds around hypnotic refrains and immersive grooves, culminating in an intoxicating fusion of brass, soulful backing vocals, and trip-hop-leaning rhythms that blur the line between smoky jazz lounge and cinematic electronic soundscape.
According to Jamisen, “This Is Not An Act” explores twin themes of authenticity and mortality. He explains that the lyrics represent “the reflection of an inner dialogue of a person communicating with their ‘higher self,’ trying to grow beyond their limitations and past mistakes.” The narrative also embraces a spiritual perspective, describing a connection with deceased loved ones and an acceptance of life’s finite nature.
The musical foundation originated with Copenhagen-based electronic music producer and audio engineer Joachim Michaelis, whose long-running creative partnership with Jamisen finally results in an official collaborative release. Building upon that base, Jamisen recorded lead vocals in Phoenix, where additional drum programming and live saxophone and flute performances were also captured.
The project then moved to Los Angeles for further shaping with veteran producer and engineer John X Volaitis, whose credits include work with The Rolling Stones, Tracy Chapman, Bonnie Raitt, and Whitesnake. Through arrangement refinement, live instrument reimagining, and detailed engineering and mixing, the production was elevated into a shimmering audio testimonial of personal transformation.
Sonically, the track embodies an intoxicating blend of spoken-word delivery, soulful harmonies, and richly layered instrumentation. Its hypnotic rhythms and sensual brass elements create a distinctive atmosphere that feels equally introspective and cinematic, reflecting Jamisen’s ongoing exploration of storytelling through sound and texture.
With “This Is Not An Act,” Allan Jamisen continues to push beyond genre boundaries while deepening the emotional and conceptual scope of his work, offering listeners an immersive journey through self-reflection, spiritual dialogue, and the pursuit of authenticity.
