The Iddy Biddies – ‘The World Inside’

Led by singer-songwriter Gene Wallenstein, Berklee-based indie collective The Iddy Biddies craft an absorbing blend of psychedelic folk and melodic introspection on The World Inside, venturing from hazy acoustic charm to moody, harmonically rich terrain — all grounded in honest storytelling and capturing the weight of the human experience.

A striking album opener, “It’s Just a Show” ventures from acoustic-set introspection into a hazy, moody psychedelic gem. “So let it go now, you’re on your own now,” the vocals let out during a blissful, hypnotic chorus, with wordless backing vocals bolstering the mix and traversing to twinkling keys. Inspired by Alan Watts, the opener compels in its strong melodic drive and thematic poignancy, beckoning listeners to look inward instead of numbing their senses, which is a temptation in this tumult-filled world.

The ensuing “Mr. September” also delights, its jangly guitars and dynamic vocals compelling between dynamic contemplations and a “nothing lasts forever” reminder building into a stirring title-touting chorus: “It ain’t over for Mr. September.” Another standout track, “The World Inside” serves as the narrative bridge of the album, capturing the moment within a relationship when it starts to unravel, as unspoken words begin to accumulate. Soft acoustics and dreamy keys combine with a harmoniously excellent vocal presence, with a lovely likeness to Matthew Sweet. Further successes like the suavely mellow mystique of “Strange World” and jangly charmer “Words You Like to Say” continue the abundance of highlights on The World Inside, a stellar album from The Iddy Biddies.

“The World Inside” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
