Pete Scales – ‘Blue Without You’

Recently released album Blue Without You showcases twelve timeless folk tracks spanning Pete Scales‘ fifty-year songwriting journey. From “Nebraska-esque” demos to soulful expanses, these heartfelt reflections capture universal yearning and melodic sincerity.

Scales describes the release as “the best 12 songs I ever wrote in more than 50 years as a musician—they’re really my life’s work as a musician.” He continues: “I’m proud of these songs. I worked on each of them for years, and I always had fun playing them whether by myself or making music with others. With this release, I hope they’ll find a new audience and their way into other artists’ repertoires.”

The album’s title track opens in riveting form, its prancing acoustics lending a warming vibrancy that contrasts enjoyably with its snow-day lyrical scene-setting. “It snowed in Minnesota, and you were on my mind,” Scales’ vocals emanate, leading into a “now I’m blue without you” heartrending admission following the idea to “spend some time apart.” The shift to a “cold Nebraska night” continues that sense of yearning following “separate ways.” The narrative of a soul-searching for another similarly beloved partner, across various cities and snowstorms, resonates throughout and into a particularly stirring “too late for that” bridge.

Scales’ heart-on-sleeve folk songwriting immerses throughout. Another highlight, “For Awhile” conveys a similar state of lonesomeness, fusing sturdy acoustic strums and breezy layers amidst “I didn’t know how hard it was” retrospections, while the elegantly impactful “Melissa” excels with an understated, smitten quality and “I’ll be there” reassurances — soulful and blues-touched, for a sound reminding fondly of Daryl Hall’s stripped-down material. “Tears Just Don’t Try” stands out as well, its accounts of personal stumbles and lingering melancholy being another piece of relatable, authentic songwriting, while the fading memories within “Grandma Needs Your Prayers” captures a solemn ache of aging. Blue Without You is a timeless-sounding folk achievement of an album from Pete Scales.

“Grandma Needs Your Prayers” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
