The first FIFA football video game was released at the end of 1993 as a collaboration between sports governing body FIFA and game developers EA. More than 40 games followed before EA and FIFA split after the release of 23, reportedly due to FIFA demanding twice as much money as they had in previous years.

EA continued to release yearly games under the EA Sports FC banner and now FIFA has confirmed their return to gaming.

FIFA Heroes is a five-v-five arcade football game, with a focus on fast-paced, exaggerated gameplay. The title will feature a roster of professional players currently active in the sport alongside World Cup 2026 mascots and a handful of mythological figures including Norse god Thor and Sun Wukong, The Monkey King from 16th-century Chinese novel Journey To The West.

FIFA Heroes will also feature “a string of superpowers players will be able to master, from teleporting through balls, to meteor shots, and magnetic tackles.”

“This is arcade football reimagined with matches that are quick, explosive and full of surprises. Players will be able to master superpowers to turn matches upside down. Build your squad, master their skills, and dominate the competition in a brand-new way to play the world’s favourite sport,” reads a press release.

The free-to-play FIFA Heroes will launch April 28 for mobile and PC before coming to Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch “shortly afterwards”.

“The last thing we wanted to create was another football simulation game,” said Kyle Joyce, director of publishers Solace. “We wanted to imbue FIFA Heroes with fast-paced gameplay that will appeal to a whole new generation of players. We’re able to deliver a football experience that resonates with fans everywhere. We can’t wait to share what’s next.”

FIFA has also announced it will be releasing an exclusive game on Netflix to celebrate the men’s World Cup. “The FIFA World Cup is going to be the cultural event of 2026, and now fans will be able to celebrate their fandom by bringing the game right into their living rooms,” said Alain Tascan, president of games at Netflix. “We want to bring football back to its roots with something everyone can play with just the touch of a button.”

In other news, Nintendo has confirmed that it’s going to start selling some Switch 2 games at a lower price.
