Los Angeles-based artist Lera Shemi delivers a darkly atmospheric third single with “call you by your namE,” a track from her upcoming 12-song concept album, You & Me & HER. The Berklee-trained producer handles every aspect of the electronic grunge project herself. Her industrial rhythms and heavy bass grit complement thematic explorations of unfinished love left behind in Ukraine, where she is originally from — blending toxic escapism with a distorted pop intrigue.
A buzzing, grimy bass entrancement fuses with industrial rhythms for a darkly atmospheric pull, right away. “I like to call you by your name,” Shemi’s woozy, dreamy vocal intrigue emerges, bolstered by panting vocal backings as sporadic synth buzzes and steady percussion build alongside. The one-minute turn sees a lovely shift to bouncier synth tones, maintaining the grimy initial edge while adding a melodic ethereality via the vocal-like snippets.
Although the track barely spans over a minute-and-a-half, “call you by your namE” makes a strikingly atmospheric impression. The initially cavernous soundscape, propelled by moody synth-bass and whirring effects, moves seamlessly into a vocal presence that dazzles in its artful layering between the impactful refrain and added rhythmic backing vocal effects. The track marks a fantastic continuation of quality songwriting and production from Lera Shemi, who first caught our ears last year with the excellent debut single “such a gooD boy.”
