The creatives behind the new Malcolm In The Middle reboot have hinted at the possibility of newcomer Keeley Karsten starring in a spin-off.
Titled Malcolm In The Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, the four-part revival of the 2000s sitcom will arrive on April 10 on Disney+ in the UK, and find the title character (Frankie Muniz) now a father keeping his daughter away from his chaotic family.
Keeley Karsten joined the cast as Leah, Malcolm’s daughter, and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly fellow cast member Jane Kaczmarek, who plays Malcolm’s mother Lois, explained that there are many options for spin-offs in the future.
“It’s a whole new set of characters and circumstances that are ripe,” she said, with executive producer Katsky Boomer adding that a gender-swapped spin-off focusing on Leah would be a viable option. “She could absolutely hold a show,” she said. “Keeley is an undiscovered star. As a performer, she has this crazy potential that would be silly for show business not to use.”
Elsewhere in the article, star Muniz said returning to his most famous role was a rejuvenating experience. “It was the first time in my career as an actor that I was happy to have the label ‘actor,’” he recalled . “When I was a kid, I just showed up and said the words and it all worked out. Now, I’m making a plan going into the scene. Doing the prep makes the process really, really fun.”
Last year, Muniz revealed he rewatched the show with his wife, and wasn’t impressed with his character. He told People: “She looked at me at the very end and she goes, ‘You weren’t acting at all. You are literally Malcolm.’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t know how to take that because Malcolm sucked.’ He was the worst character on that show!”
