“Light of the Dead” is a riveting new single from Brooklynzhen, the project of Glasgow-based artist Allan McCafferty. Channeling the imagined consciousness of wildlife within vanishing habitats, the track utilizes raw, first-take recordings of analog synths and vibe-y guitars. The result is a deeply affecting instrumental meditation on environmental devastation, blending technical prowess with atmospheric urgency.
A murky assembly of throbbing rhythms and industrial-friendly guitar warbles coexist as the track’s absorbing soundscape unveils. The intertwining of guitar and analog synth makes for a resonating atmospheric result throughout, maintaining a balance between nocturnal intrigue and glimmering dreaminess. Meanwhile, the rhythms maintain a pulsing sense of comfort, serving as a point of continuity as the caressing synths and frequency-like guitar tones intertwine with artful cohesion.
The production is particularly memorable in its easing in and out of various subtle elements. Just after the three-minute mark is one instance, where the rhythms and guitar tones retain their original pace, while elegant washes of synths add a spacey, serene captivation. The head-nodding rhythmic pace, soaring guitar elements, and hazy synth work combine for an excellent track from Brooklynzhen, an artist whose tonal versatility and strong atmospheric capabilities are on full display with “Light of the Dead.”
