Grey Jacks – “Frankie’s Way”

“Frankie’s Way” is a narratively captivating track from Grey Jacks’ newly released album, INTERgenerational. Recorded at Echo Lab with producer Matt Pence, the cinematic Americana production explores a mother’s orphaned childhood in 1950s Texas, blending gritty electric guitars with lush, emotive strings. Grey Jacks drew inspiration from late night stories his mother would tell him, about her childhood.

A lovely, melodic array of strings, jangly guitar, and bouncy bass lead into a memorable vocal presence. “There’s a light up the road,” the vocals enamor amidst a bass-heavy allure, expanding into murky guitars and vibrant strings. The retrospective lyricism — “I’m sure when school starts up, you’re gonna leave me with someone else” — feels reflective of a childhood with frequent changes, the “leave me” lyric re-emerging alongside emotively escalating strings for an especially resonating sequence, aethetically reminiscent of John Vanderslice.

The second half resembles a more coming-to-terms, reflective quality as one reaches adulthood. “It’s all the things we don’t know, come back to haunt us again,” layered vocals push forth, navigating “the lifeboat” of both the past and present day as heartfelt strings continue to dazzle. “I’ll just be right up the road,” the vocals culminate in a gorgeous outro, where a chamber-pop appeal emanates from the instrumentation and alluring vocals, before a rock-ready questioning concludes the track with pulsing, infectious energy. “Frankie’s Way” is an affectingly personal standout from Grey Jacks.
