Pocket Lint – “Cyanometer”

“Cyanometer” serves as the opening track on Pocket Lint‘s upcoming album, Wunderkammer. The project is the vehicle of Mark Heffernan, who describes that full-length as “based around the idea of a Wunderkammer or cabinet of curiosities and each song is an exhibit within that collection.” This standout opener uses 80s drum machines and guitars at the forefront, enjoyably, envisioning a device used to quantify internal blueness.

Spacey synth pads and sturdy, sporadic bass buzzes progress into an introspective vocal immersion. “Blue is my heart,” Heffernan’s vocals consume, maneuvering into gorgeously dark intrigue with expanded synth color and vocal emotion as the two-minute turn approaches. “Let’s see just how blue,” the vocals continue, thematically referencing the measurement of the “Cyanometer,” a pivotal part of the imagined Wunderkammer. The beckoning to quantify and qualify that blueness, internally, is echoed in both the heartfelt vocals and building instrumentation.

The addition of soaring guitar elements delights in the second half, combining with “strange kind of blue” vocal wonderment for an especially gripping melodic pull. Meanwhile, ’80s-inspired drums maintain a steady, warming pulse. Trickling, arpeggiated synths then meld with the caressing synth pads for a blissfully atmospheric finale. “Cyanometer” is a riveting standout from Pocket Lint, leaving us firmly anticipating the rest of Wunderkammer.
